DIRECTOR’S NOTES

Eric Jensen’s Director’s Note:

Robyn Hood 2 is a wonderful play that has heavily borrowed the plot line from an old story called Ivan Ho!, which Bob Bedore and I wrote in 1989. This was also our first run-in with a fantastic actor named Clarence Strohn. He played the part of Jean Bidet then, and he has happily reprised this role now.

When these three old guys were in high school… required reading was an old novel by Sir Walter Scott called Ivanhoe, which was a swashbuckling knight’s tale. We noticed that it coincided quite a bit with Robin Hood. So we thought that we would bring Robin Hood to the forefront of this story and create a new version called Robyn Hood 2. In this production, instead of an archery tournament, Robyn Hood enters a jousting competition fighting for the good name of England. He no longer has to face the sheriff of Nottingham, but rather a nasty Norman knight named Maire de Fromage. His beautiful true love is still Maid Marion, but now he is part of a love triangle between himself, Marion, and a gypsy woman named Lady Rebecca.

We needed a good subtitle for Robyn Hood 2, and since so much of it has to do with knighthood and the chivalric code, we thought we should add the name “knight” in the subtitle. When someone suggested the title “Knight Fever,” instantly we knew that all of our musical parody songs had to be from the disco tech era. So we leaned into that theme and we think it makes for an amazing soundtrack.

This play is hilarious, but it pales in comparison to the talented actors who bring their comedic chops to the forefront. They are all extremely gifted. We are tremendously blessed to have

them in the show and give life to a story to spread laughter to our community. Sit back and relax and enjoy this show. We are certain they will give you Knight Fever.

CAST BIOS

Jessica Andrews – Lady Rebecca:

Jessica is so excited to be doing another show with the OBT. She was most recently seen in Greece Is the Word as Hera. Other favorite OBT shows are Dracula vs Henry Botter and The Scarlet Pimpernel. She has always loved music and singing and making people laugh. She was involved in several music programs at the University of Utah while pursuing her degree in Civil Engineering. Her hobbies include karaoke, fire dancing, and spending time with her fur-babies.

Bob Bedore – Maire de Fromage:

Bob is once again thrilled to be around so many funny people and help make people laugh! Bob has been blessed to perform in hundreds of productions, appeared in some movies and TV shows, and even spent time as a weatherman on ABC4. You can catch him with his improv show “Quick Wits” (31 years and no stopping) or during city council meetings with West Jordan.

Kelly Bellis – Maid Marion:

Kelly Bellis is delighted to be back at the OBT portraying one of her favorite characters, Maid Marion. Kelly was last seen at the OBT as Karla Kroft in Indianapolis Jones, or a variety of pop-in characters on the other nights. She is grateful for the chance to perform with her children and pass on the love of theater to the next generation.

Charisse Berry – Ed / Announcer / Guard / King Richard:

This is my second show with the OBT. It’s been quite a challenge playing five different characters. I’m thankful for the opportunity to stretch and grow. Thanks to my family and friends for their support and for viewers like you.

Jenn Crabb – Lady Clydesdale – Understudy:

Jen loves any opportunity to play with her theater family on stage! Favorite roles include Reverend Mother in Nunsense, Amazing Mayzie in Seussical the Musical, Miss Marple in A Murder is Announced, and of course Lady Clydesdale in Robyn Hood! She is very happy to have a chance to work with her friends at OBT again!

Ed Gilmore – Jean de Bidet:

Ed is always excited to perform with OBT, which has given him great friends and great memories. You may have seen him when Dracula was fighting The Hunchback and Henry Botter, Frightmare Before Christmas, or dying spectacularly in Hamleton. You may have also seen him around town eating fish and chips or cheering his kids on in different activities. Thanks to Cathy and the family for their support, and a big shoutout to my nephew Leo!!

Élise Hanson – Lady Rebecca & Old Peasant Woman – Understudy:

Élise Hanson has been an actor, producer, director, and playwright for *mumble mumble* years. She learned nearly everything she knows about grassroots production from Eric Jensen, so she is so grateful and delighted to be under his deft direction again! Recent credits include Ada Craven in Craven, Beatrice in Kill Claudio!, and Harper Pitt in Angels in America. This November she will reprise the role of Hamlet ten years after playing him the first time.

Eric Jensen – Alan-a-dale:

Eric has been performing plays at the Off Broadway Theatre since its inception. As one of the founding members he has put his life’s work into making shows like Robyn Hood fun for the family and fun for the actors as well. This production is one that he is perhaps typecast, because he plays a smelly, not so smart, sweet guy, and that’s who he is in real life. Eric also works at Woods Cross Elementary as their theater/music prep specialist and enjoys that wholeheartedly. Eric thanks his lovely wife, Sandy, and his son, Austinn, for their wonderful and unwavering support.

Chuck MacDermott – Friar Tuck:

Chuck is back at OBT for round three! You may remember him as Ozzy Manwell in The Scarlet Pimpernel or the ghost of Marley in A Christmas Carol 2—because who could forget that haunting performance? Now, he’s thrilled to play one of his favorite roles in Robyn Hood. When not on stage, Chuck enjoys perfecting his dramatic exits, overacting just enough, and convincing himself that stage combat totally counts as cardio.

Scott Macdonald – Robyn Hood:

Scott believes theater embiggens the soul of even the smallest man and is thrilled to bring Robin Hood to life alongside this talented cast. He’s played everything from maniacal villains to endearing hobos and even dashing heroes. Offstage, he enjoys biking, skiing, big-wheeling, and speaking in the third person. He’s endlessly grateful to his son, Jonas, his amazing friends and family, and especially to Jill, his co-conspirator in laughter, love, adventure, and all the best plot twists in life.

Nick Matthews – Maire de Fromage:

Nick plays Maire de Fromage and recently appeared in Craven with Wasatch Theater Company. Other credits include Kitchen Sink and The Advantageous Adventures of Mrs. Meddlesome with SpeaKeasy Theatre Company, Worship with Immigrant’s Daughter Theatre, ThreePenny Theatre Company’s A Shayna Maidel, and Little Man Theater Company’s TRIP and Othello.

Marie McNeill – Maid Marion:

Mariah is so excited to be participating in Off Broadway Theatre’s Robyn Hood. She is thrilled to be playing the part of Maid Marion . She has performed with Off Broadway Theatre before in a minor role in their production of Seussical the Musical and she just couldn’t get enough. She’s back with a zest and fantastic acting chops in this leading role. She is doubly excited to be performing with her daughter Kate. She thanks her friends and family for their love and support.

Aimee McPhie – Lady Wilma:

Aimee is thrilled to be doing another show with OBT. Her last performance was as Spirit of Christmas Past in Christmas Carol Part II. Aimee loves using her creativity to bring her role in Robyn Hood 2 to life. Aimee currently works as an accounting associate as she transitions into her career as a mental health therapist and aspires to become a certified drama therapist, where she will be able to merge creativity with her passion for helping others. In her spare time, Aimee enjoys singing at karaoke and hanging at home with her two cats and with family.

Jeff North – Little John:

Jeff is thrilled to be back on stage with OBT!! Jeff has previously enjoyed working with OBT in The Scarlet Pimpernel, Utahoma!, Indianapolis Jones, and Forever Dead, among others. Jeff would like to thank his amazing wife and kids for being such great support!! Jeff most recently performed as The Balladeer in Assassins! It has been great to get back into such a fun, funny show. Enjoy!

Shea Potter – Robyn Hood:

After a nearly 15-year hiatus from theater, Shea returned to the acting scene with his fifth production at the OBT. Previously he was in My School Musical, played Squidward in Spongebob The Musical, Professor Scape in Dracula vs. Henry Botter, and Potzie in Greece is the Word. He is excited to play Robyn Hood, acting alongside his talented daughter, Sia (Knight 3). Thanks Steph and fam, for your love and support. Enjoy the show!

Jill Stark – Old Peasant Woman:

Hey everyone it’s your quirky old Jill who has been playing old British ladies since she was 24. It feels closer to reality now. She has been performing since she could talk and has been in various OBT shows and Laughing Stock Improv for almost 18 years. She is still educating young minds when she isn’t attempting to make people laugh. She would like to thank her friends, family, and dogs who support her weird hobbies. Also thank you to Scott who is her partner in crime in life and on obstacle courses.

Clarence Strohn – Jean de Bidet:

Clarence is excited to return after performing in Greece is the Word! Known for believing his own jokes are the funniest (they are), Clarence spends his muggle life in IT—installing printers, expanding his massive spreadsheet empire, and coding at 3 a.m. because why not? In his free time he sleeps, flirts with phlebotomists, and works on his sweet moves for this show—because nothing says ‘peak performance’ like barely surviving a dance number. Clarence is thrilled to be part of this delightfully ridiculous parody and promises you’ll laugh at least once…probably at his jokes!

Shelley Timothy – Lady Clydesdale:

Shelley, a longtime Off Broadway Theatre fan, is thrilled to be a part of this talented and funny cast. A teacher for 27 years, Shelley’s passion extends beyond the stage and into her classroom, where she hopes to inspire her students to step out of the box and face challenges. Shelley thanks her family for putting up with all her craziness and inspiring her to do the unthinkable.

Ireland Berry – Knight 1:

Ireland is excited for her first OBT show! She’s been in Hades Town and Puffs at Kearns High. Ireland loves theatre and art.

Oliver Gavriliuc – Knight 1:

Oliver is thrilled to be part of Robyn Hood 2, and loves acting, bringing characters to life on stage, and dancing. When not performing, Oliver enjoys traveling and playing football with his friends.

Harmony Bellis – Knight 2:

Harmony Bellis is stepping on stage in her first rehearsed role as Knight 2. She is excited to be part of this hilarious production.

Lexie Gavriliuc – Knight 2:

Lexie was so happy to be part of Lore of the Rings that she asked for a new adventure! She loves acting, singing, and doing gymnastics tricks. When not performing, Lexie enjoys doing gymnastics and jumping on the trampoline!

Jonas Macdonald – Knight 3:

Jonas is excited to be back on the OBT stage as Knight 3! He loves performing, creating games, and playing with friends. Outside of the theater Jonas enjoys playing soccer and basketball, and is just shy of earning his black belt in Taekwondo. He thanks his family, friends, and dogs for their support!

Sia Potter – Knight 3:

Sia acted as a sardine in OBT’s Spongebob: The Musical and Narc Mouthoff in Dracula vs. Henry Botter. She is excited to be Knight 3 in Robyn Hood 2.

Belle Bellis – Knight 4:

Belle Bellis is excited to be back at the OBT as Knight 4. Bell last performed with the OBT as Knight 1 in Ivan Ho!

Kate McNeill – Knight 4:

Kate is an amazing young lady. Her fantastic expression and amazing voice really shines throughout the rehearsal process, and we’re sure you’ll find her to be an amazing star on stage. She’s lucky to be performing with her mother most nights. Thanks, Mom. I love you.

CREW BIOS

Anna Kennedy – Stage Manager:

Anna is excited to be with the OBT again this year. While Anna has previously acted in Greece is the Word, The Scarlet Pimpernel, and It’s a Wondrous Life, this is her first time stage managing! It has been a joy to work with Eric and this fabulous cast. In her spare time, Anna is an attorney and enjoys reading and fishing for compliments that she won’t actually accept.

Vivean Godwin – Sound & Light Tech

Viveann has been working with OBT for four years now, and has enjoyed playing on stage as many fun characters, such as Snooky in Greece is the Word, and Crocky and Dr Hamblin in Jurassic Park City. She has also worked as tech on a few shows, including Robyn Hood and It’s a Wondrous Life, and is excited to be the sound and light tech for Robyn Hood 2.

Robbie Dalley – Sound and Light Consultant

A Primetime Emmy Award winner (yes, it is true!), Robbie has spent the past 20 years working all things tech for various groups, including the Sugar Factory Playhouse. He helped to start the OBT’s inhouse tech program and has continued to help push the boundaries of what is possible for our theater. Always behind the scenes, he is a dad to a great, soon-to-be-10-year-old son (Robbie), two cats (Penelope & Charlie), and a Corgi (Flora). He divides his non-theater time between work and family.

David Bellis – Laughing Stock Improv Tech

David has been the sound and light tech at the OBT for many years. He has been the sound and light tech for many of our  productions and has been a steadfast tech for our improv shows. David works full-time and spends many of his weekends helping out at the OBT, keeping the laughter going. Thanks David!

ERIC R. AND SANDY HUBBLE JENSEN’S BIOS

Eric and Sandy are co-founders of the Off Broadway Theatre and Laughing Stock improv comedy troupe. They have worked closely for some 30 years, dedicating much of their time to building and growing the Off Broadway Theatre. They have been married for over 30 years and have one son, Austinn, who has grown up acting in numerous OBT and other productions.

Eric, the artistic and technical director for the OBT, grew up in Murray, Utah. He received his bachelor’s degree in theater arts at the University of Utah and his master’s degree in secondary education at the University of Phoenix. As executive producer and lead playwright, director, set designer, costumer, actor, and improviser, he guides many aspiring talents at the OBT. He teaches improv classes while mentoring up-and-coming playwrights, directors, stage managers, and set designers. His acting, writing, and directing experience has also been featured at Desert Star, CenterPoint Legacy, Hale (both Orem and West Valley), and Egyptian theaters. He has taught and performed high school workshops and elementary school assemblies, as well as for some after school programs. Eric also teaches K – 6 as a fine arts specialist in the Davis School District, inspiring children to love theatre, music, dance, and all things art. Under Eric’s leadership, OBT won the Best Community Theatre award from the Utah Theatre Association in 2020, recognizing the quality of the theatre and Eric’s work with high schools and the community.

Sandy serves as the executive director of the theatre, as well as executive producer, box office manager, and social media specialist, with more than 30 years of experience in small business management. She has an extensive acting background, including the OBT, Hale Centre Theatre WVC, The Grand Theatre, Sundance Theatre, Salt Lake Acting Company, Pages Lane, and Stage Right Theater. Sandy continues to work tirelessly to grow volunteer opportunities at the OBT. She was born in Vietnam and has a bachelor’s degree in elementary education, with endorsements in ESL, STEM, and Gifted. She teaches 1st grade in the Davis School District. She has earned two Presidential Awards for Volunteering and has been recognized in Who’s Who of America.

The Off Broadway Theatre has been said to have a feel of “family,” and that’s because it is. Eric and Sandy’s mission has always been to provide a place where people can come together and make laughter ring true and provide a safe place to hone skills and develop friendships. Through the art of live performances, the theatre has reached many new friends, and its charitable outreach program has provided wonderful opportunities to serve our community.

Eric and Sandy also co-founded Laughing Stock Improv and have performed together on the OBT stage as well as at corporate and school events. They are proud to have such a long-running improv show with some amazingly talented improvisers who have been with the company for a long time.

Thank you for your many years of support and patronage in Salt Lake City and Draper, and for following us here to the Alliance Theatre. Please continue to donate to help us forge another 30+ years of spreading laughter in Utah! Go to www.theOBT.org to donate today.
